BROKEN HILL, AUSTRALIA – December 08, 2023 – Hydrostor, a global long duration energy storage (LDES) developer and operator, has reached an Agreement with Transgrid, which will see the 200MW/1600MWh Silver City Energy Storage Project (Silver City) provide back-up power to Broken Hill as early as 2027.
Hydrostor will employ an advanced compressed air energy storage system near Broken Hill. An agreement between Hydrostor and Crown Lands, part of the NSW department of planning, housing and infrastructure (DPHI), will see Hydrostor lease the land for a period of 65 years, with construction expected to begin in 2025, following development approval.
(Supplied: Hydrostor) The Transgrid report highlighted that Hydrostor's project was expected to deliver $286 million in net benefits over a 27-year assessment period, just under 6 per cent more than the diesel generators. Ms Jordan said it would have broader impacts in Broken Hill than the generators.
Canadian company Hydrostor has signed a binding agreement with base metals and exploration company Perilya for access to Perilya's Potosi mine, on the outskirts of the city. The facility will store compressed air underground and is expected to generate 200 megawatts of power that would be used as a back-up supply for Broken Hill.
Hydrostor’s technology is less affected by these limitations and can be flexibly sited due to a variety of air storage cavern methods, including a greenfield basis utilizing purpose built hard-rock caverns, salt caverns, in addition to repurposing existing assets such as mines as in the case in Broken Hill at “Silver City”.
