The development of the BESS market is still in its relative infancy, compared to more established clean energy markets. As the industry matures, there will undoubtably be challenges along the way.
BESS enables the storage of excess variable energy generation, enhancing the grid’s capacity and reliability. BESS are able to store excess energy produced in periods of low demand, which can be discharged into the grid during periods of high demand. BESS operators can therefore receive financial returns for meeting surging energy needs.

This segment is set to dominate the market by 2030, potentially accounting for up to 90% of the total market share, with annual installations projected to be between 450 and 620 GWh.
Rystad expects annual BESS deployments to grow by an average CAGR of 33% between 2022 and 2030, across all market segments including residential, commercial and grid-scale. From 43GWh of deployments last year, the firm is anticipating some 421GWh of new capacity to come online in 2030.
