By 2025, the green initiative by utility firm SP Group will deliver up to 21,000 megawatt-hour (MWh) of renewable electricity into Singapore’s power network annually.
SINGAPORE - Solar panels installed on unused land and rooftops, or floating on bodies of water, may soon be a common sight as the country accelerates its use of solar energy. Singapore is aiming to harness 1.5 gigawatt-peak (GWp) of solar energy by 2025, almost four times the current solar usage of 390 megawatt-peak (MWp).
Their total capacity amounts to an around 443-megawatt peak (MWp), with the private sector contributing most of it (53 per cent), followed by town councils and grassroots units (38 per cent). There are other technologies for optimising what little space Singapore has for solar panels.
The company is obligated to install at least 130MWp of capacity, but has the option to install as much as 200MWp, and has announced that it will install more than 320,000 PV modules across a range of buildings. Singaporean officials have granted EDP Renewables a tender to build up to 200MWp of new rooftop solar capacity in Singapore.
