In Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Observatory have been using small wind turbines to provide electrical power to the measurement and telecommunication equipment of automatic weather stations in remote locations. There are also a number of small wind turbines installed in urban environment, mostly as research and demonstration projects.
The first commercial-scale wind turbine in Hong Kong was installed by HKE. It is a Nordex N50/800kW machine with a rotor diameter of 50m and hub height of 46m. The rated power of the turbine is 800 kW and it is a stall-regulated, up-wind type, horizontal axis wind turbine.
It will have a capacity around 150 MW. Based on the model of wind turbine chosen, there will be between 13 and 19 wind turbines each with eight to 12 MW. The wind turbines’ overall height at the top will be between 271 and 198 metres above sea level. HK Electric has been collecting wind data at the site since many years.
Offshore wind energy, which can be built in Hong Kong’s waters, offers the most significant energy transition technological option for the city. In addition to wind energy’s contribution to climate change mitigation, these wind farms can also increase the city’s energy mix diversification.
Hong Kong Electric, which serves electric consumers in Hong Kong Island and Lamma Island (about 20% of Hong Kong population), proposed a 100-Megawatt (MW) offshore wind farm consisting of between 28 and 35 wind turbines off the southern coast of Lamma Island (Hong Kong Electric, 2006).
The rated power of the turbine is 800 kW and it is a stall-regulated, up-wind type, horizontal axis wind turbine. It is installed at Tai Ling on Lamma Island and was inaugurated in February 2006. The design, construction, and commissioning of the wind turbine is described in detail in the HKE website.
