Part of the power station as seen on the exterior of Elidir Fawr. The Dinorwig Power Station (/ dɪˈnɔːrwɪɡ /; Welsh: [dɪˈnɔrwɪɡ]), known locally as Electric Mountain, or Mynydd Gwefru, is a pumped-storage hydroelectric scheme, near Dinorwig, Llanberis in Snowdonia national park in Gwynedd, north Wales.
“Its construction took ten years to complete, and required one million tonnes of concrete, 200,000t of cement and 4,500t of steel.” Dinorwig was finally opened by Prince Charles in 1984. “When it was built, Dinorwig Power Station was regarded as one of the world’s most imaginative engineering and environmental projects,” says Armstrong.
Externally, all that is visible of the power station is a door on the side of the mountain, ensuring that the surrounding area of outstanding natural beauty in the heart of Snowdonia is not impaired. The power station is now owned by First Hydro Ltd. who run tours of the site and host the Electric Mountain visitor centre.
The titanic hydroelectric power scheme is housed deep inside Elidir Fawr in Snowdonia National Park and is truly breathtaking in scale. Every day water passes from a reservoir at the top of the mountain through the power station's turbine into another reservoir below.
A predecessor of modern hydropower, Dinorwig was built in an old slate quarry in Elidir Mountain in the 1970s. The pumped hydroplant is able to create energy by opening its six valves, the ball mechanisms for which are the largest ever built, allowing the water from its top reservoir to flow through turbines to its bottom.
